ABS - Anti-lock Braking System

ABS malfunction occurs due to the unit's design imperfections and failure of the components when the system is overloaded.

However, most ABS modules are repairable, and can be restored instead of replaced by an expensive unit! We own the equipment and posses the knowledge to repair most ABS units.

Most ABS modules are repairable for only
a fraction of the replacement cost

ABS Repair Advantages

In addition to the lower cost, rebuilding an ABS module has a few more advantages over replacing it:

  • repairing ABS module provides not only an affordable alternative, but also a quicker solution. Finding an identical ABS controller replacement can get complicated in some situation (depands on model/year).
  • Our knowledge and experience allow us to rebuild ABS modules in a very short period of time. Once the ABS module gets to us, it usually take us one day of work. So basically, queue time depands on shipping and delivery.

  • The ABS repair process can improve the quality of the components and the module's reliability. This can contribute to prevent future unit malfunctions.
  • There is a work guarantee, so there is no charge if the malfunction returns with the same ABS module.
The ABS only serves as a back up to the brakes system

Antilock brakes System's Objectives

The system’s primary aims are:

  • Maximize braking power
  • Allow the driver to maintain control on the steering by preventing the wheels from locking and skidding
  • Shorten braking distance under most conditions
Driving with ABS warning light on can damage the transmission

ABS Components

The ABS system is complicated and consists of several components:

  • Sensors: located usually at each wheel (front and rear sensors), let the ABS system know when a wheel is about to lock.
  • Valves: There is a valve in each of the brakes with 3 positions:
    • Open
    • Blocks
    • Releases
  • Pump: Puts pressure in the valves
  • ABS Controller: A computer that monitors information it receives from the different components. The controller is the "brain" of the system as it constantly collects valuable data and process it. The ABS system's ultimate operations are set by the controller after evaluating the processed data.

When the ABS system is in operation the valves rapidly open and close. The pulsing we feel in the brake pedal when the system is working is the result of the valves.

ABS Evolution

ABS was first developed for aircraft and introduced in the 1950’s. Limited automobile use started in the 1960’s, but it was expensive and somewhat unreliable.

Bosch ABS Unit The real change was only in 1978 Bosch introduced its ABS 2 system, which was available that year in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class followed by the BMW 7 series. The Bosch ABS 2 system was the first system to be ready for mass production, and has been constantly improved since by Bosch. Bosch has manufactured 100 million ABS systems since 1978.

In 1984 ATE introduced the first integrated ABS, the ATE ABS Mk 2. In the next couple of years, 250,000 units were produced and used in Ford models. The first car to come with ABS as standard across the entire range was the Ford Granada Mk 3 in 1985.

The European Federation of Automotive Manufacturers has committed to fitting with ABS as standard all new cars sold in Europe from mid-2004.
